Plein-Air Prose

Plein-Air Prose is a Seattle-based writing community that provides opportunities for local writers to nurture their writing through nature!

Most writers spend long hours alone, indoors, hunched over desks, and staring at computer screens, which is not healthy physically or mentally. Since the pandemic in 2020, the number of online writing groups has exploded, adding even more time writers spend with technology. In 2024, I created Plein-Air Prose in response to the burnout caused by Zoom fatigue, writers craving more human connection, and my own need for a conducive environment for writing.
Plein-Air Prose encourages writers to take a break from tapping on keyboards and instead to tap into the many creative benefits of spending time in nature, breathing fresh air, moving the body, writing by hand, and interacting in-person with other writers--activities that naturally boost inspiration and productivity and have many health benefits as well.

Activities include "Write-Outs," workshops, retreats, and other unique writing experiences in and around the Seattle area, and most events are free or low-cost. Many events also include art supplies and writing prompts to help writers get into a state of "flow" for their writing session. Keep scrolling for more details about the group; for examples of some of our past events, check out the Past Events page.

If you're an adventurous writer in the Seattle area and would like to join us, membership is FREE -- just sign up for the PS Newsletter below to

More About Plein-Air Prose
Picture
The name was borrowed from another creative outdoor art form, plein-air painting, or painting en plein air (French for "outdoors"), where artists set up easels and canvases at parks, beaches, and other natural environments and paint or draw the scenery in front of them. For writers, it's even easier - the only equipment needed is a notebook and pen or pencil! (Though some members also bring laptops or tablets too.)

Another goal of
Plein-Air Prose is to provide dedicated time, additional support, and community accountability to help authors finish their WIPs (works in progress) and get more meaningful, life-changing stories out into the world. Resources and events are designed to build and strengthen storytelling and self-editing skills, and for assistance with navigating the editing and publishing processes (traditional or indie), to put writers on a successful path toward achieving their literary goals.
