Crafting Scenes for Creative Writers

​Using the art of collage* in this unique, fun, hands-on, in-person workshop, you will learn: 
  • essential elements of effective scenes
  • different types of scenes & how they fit with story structure & narrative arc
  • how the concepts of narrative transportation, narrative thrust & narrative thread inform scene decisions
  • how, when & why to use show vs. tell
  • common mistakes in scene writing​ & storytelling​
*No artistic skills necessary!

Who should take this class?
  • Writers of fiction and creative nonfiction, whether longform (novels, memoirs) or shortform (short stories, personal essays), interested in learning or strengthening scene-writing skills, whether for a completed draft, a work in progress, or a new story idea
  • Newer editors looking to learn more about storytelling concepts to enhance skills for or break into developmental editing and/or book coaching​
  • Crafters who want to learn new art techniques or just want a fun night of crafting in the company of other creatives!
All participants must be age 18 or over.
Class Details:
Date: Wed., May 14, 2025
Time: 6:30 to 8:30 pm
Location: Phinney Neighborhood Center, Seattle, WA (limited space; registration ends 5/11)
​Cost: $45
All art supplies & tools provided! Come prepared to get your hands dirty (or at least gluey!) and to do some writing -- either on a scene in your work in progress or a new one prompted by your work of art.

About the Instructor:
Lynn Post is a lifelong crafter, specializing in the art of paper collage, and a book editor and coach with over a decade of experience working with publishing companies and authors at every stage of the writing and editorial process, specializing in fiction and memoir.
She loves providing opportunities and support for writers to make time in their busy schedules to work on the craft of storytelling, through classes and her outdoor writing group, Plein-Air Prose.
